The U.S. Fire Administration reports that chimneys, flues, or fuel burners account for 77% of residential building heating fires. But how do these fires start? Most commonly, it’s chalked up to improper usage and lack of care for wood-burning appliances. Creosote buildup—which is extremely flammable and can be lit from a single ember— must be cleared to keep your home safe.
The most common chimney fires are caused by the following:
Burning wet or unseasoned wood
Failing to have your chimney swept often
Chimney blockages that restrict airflow

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) requires that all home buyers and sellers hire a chimney repair company to conduct a complete fireplace and chimney inspection before the sale’s finalization. Additionally, homeowners are recommended to schedule an inspection following a chimney fire, lightning strike, chimney damage caused by trees, water, or a change in fuel type.
